As the basic concept for three-dimension objects we have been
rather particular about wood, the reason being that wood is such
an important material for us Japanese.  Natural materials and human
beings assimilate in which discord of expressions and confrontation
between materials and techniques generate.  It is such a world of
animism under which our philosophy lies that is different from that
of the western culture.  And it is Mr. Tateyama, the artist in question,
who satisfies my desire.  I do not regard him as a sculptor.
I would like to introduce him as an important expressionist of the current
era.We will exhibit his latest works which are masterpieces indeed.
Kazuhiro Seki, Director
“A Scene at a Moment”
Should the other self of me exist, it would look like the figures exhibited.
I would assume that my various feelings appear as an incarnation
having more than just one pair of hands.“A Scene at a Moment” is my
own reflection at a certain moment and one of the psychological scenes.
The torso gone, also the limbs, it could be a kind of self sacrifice and /or
a proof of dissension.  It is, however, a tentacle trying to capture
something as if it were to complement them for the purpose.I face wood
in order to obtain a sure feeling through each momentary scene that
comes across my mind.  And once I stand vis-a-vis with the image I
become “positive”.
