I am of the opinion that during the 20th Century ART has shifted from the posession |
| |
of the privileged class to what the general public also can enjoy. And that from the |
| |
21st Century onward its essential part has developed, and will further acquire socio |
| |
-anthropological elements. |
| |
| |
In other words, the consumption of ART via popularization will become related to |
| |
diversified phases of science. The awareness level of ART is now in the process of |
| |
firmly establishing itself. |
| |
| |
Daisuke Funaki took part last year in the Group Show organized by this Gallery with |
| |
a specific theme offered for public participation. |
| |
| |
His unique works of cubism not seen in the past represent the current social phenomenon. |
| |
| |
His works have the power to draw our attention to the issues which we are apt to oversee. |
| |
It is quite common at present for us to intentionally ignore involvement in any problems |
| |
awkward and complicated. Such evasion is not to be justified. |
| |
| |
Those who came in contact with his works would be conscious of themselves pretending |
| |
not to face the reality of Japan being deeply in debt which the country would probably . |
| |
be unable to repay! In this sense Daisuke Funaki's works belong to "avant-garde" |
| |
| |
He expresses his reasons comically to which I would like to draw your attention. |
| |
I take pleasure in introducing Daisuke Funaki. |

Casual Commitment |
| |
| |
I mean to say that we are to commit ourselves more casually with other persons |
| |
than yourself and things in general. |
| |
| |
My interpretation of ART is creating the future. My works, therefore, |
| |
are always committed to things in the world both in the past and at present. |
| |
In my opinion ART can become a new medium to bring awareness to people. |
| |
| |
When Internet came into being just how many of us were sure of its becoming |
| |
such an effective communication tool? |
| |
And how many predicted that the Internet media would be a threatening competitor |
| |
of the press and TV media? |
| |
In the same manner it is possible for ART to become a medium which will |
| |
make us consicious of the"existence other than oneself (people, 'mono' and phenomena)". |
| |
| |
The very "awareness" does function as a clue to casual commitment. |
| |
| |
Since the "Disaster(3/11/2012)" the Japanese people have learned or been expected |
| |
(forced?)not to rely on their Government, instead to think individually in order to draw |
| |
conclusions and act accordingly. |
| |
| |
It is not hard to assume since President Obama's inaugural address, |
| |
not only in Japan, but also in other parts of the world a phenomenon exists |
| |
where a united body has been shifting to smaller disorganized units giving rise |
| |
to the theory of Euro-dissolution. |
| |
| |
That applies also to culture, industry and ART. |
| |
In Japan industry declines, and culture is centered around Internet where both senders |
| |
and recipients are going every which way they please. |
| |
| |
Steve Jobs who recently passed away had realized a number of progressive innovations |
| |
by successfully combining the existing technologies and brought totally new experiences |
| |
to mankind. |
| |
| |
In this era we are to commit ourselves to what lies beyond our standing point instead |
| |
of dashing into one and the same genre and direction, we should nurture and further |
| |
the strength each one of us possesses and complement the respective weaknesses. |
| |
This would certainly give us all newexperiences leading to innovations. |
| |
| |
Japan should recognize a diversified sense of value and accept various culture, |
| |
thereby making people today more conscious of the necessity to aim at a |
| |
"low-context society" rather than a "high-context" one (as pointed out by Prof |
| |
Edward T. Hall, US socio-anthropologist), at a closer-communication and a high |
| |
educational society as well. |
| |
| |
Japan has been fractionalized and dispersed. |
| |
In ART as well where an individual artist generates his feeling and expresses it as if it were |
| |
done in an isolated power plant. That could even impoverish him further. |
| |
| |
The more diversified, the better are the works of art. |
| |
The same applies to individuality. No matter what, ART is the supreme "MONO". |
| |
| |
We ought to connect the past and present, thereby bringing the awareness to people of today; |
| |
we should have and maintain a purpose of creating our future nations and societies accordingly. |
